Sixties Shockers: A Critical Filmography of Horror Cinema, 1960-1969 Review(The title of this review is the tagline for GODZILLA vs. the THING covered in this book.)
This is a really, really, really, really good book! I expected the usual encyclopedic listing of movies, cast, awards, and plot synopses which are typical of this kind of work, but was more than pleasantly surprised to encounter well written critical analyses of all of the films. The coherent voices of the two authors (Mark Clark and Bryan Senn) give this work a heft and depth that is all too rare in many reference books.
The book begins with a lengthy 32 page essay setting the scope and context of the included films. This is followed by a fairly exhaustive listing of all films deemed to be "horror" (or science fiction films with "horror" elements) which were released from 1960 to 1969. Illustrations are liberally used throughout, though they tend to be small and in black and white, but they still do a good job of illuminating many of the films.
I particularly enjoyed that each film's "tag line" was included. E.g., "When the Mountain Bleeds, Terror Reigns!" for THE LEGEND OF BLOOD MOUNTAIN, or "You Must Pass the 'D-13' Test to Prepare You for the Horrifying Experience of DEMENTIA 13. If You Fail the Test . . . You Will Be Asked to Leave the Theater!" for DEMENTIA 13. Chock full of fun, that.
The book includes a 90 page appendix of "More Movies" that includes brief information and synopses on films not considered appropriate for the body of the work. The bibliography consists of 65 titles which would make for a nice 1960's horror reference library were one to acquire them all. Also listed are the titles of 26 separate periodicals relevant to horror movies (e.g., Cinefantastique, Fangoria, and Shock Cinema). The index is extremely useful for identifying individuals (actors, producers, directors, etc.) who are related to specific films. Looking up "Price, Vincent" will lead you to over 30 films listed in this work wherein Mr. Price played some role.
Easy to recommend this for any academic library with a film program. Also a nice addition to public libraries who have extensive movie libraries - this book would be good for both collection development, as well as useful for patrons looking for viewing suggestions.
This is a VERY well produced volume for which I can easily give the maximum of 5 stars.
