Jesse James and the Movies ReviewNext to Billy the Kid, Jesse Woodson James is the most famous American outlaw of all time. Like the Kid, James has been a staple of motion pictures over the years. And, unfortunately, most of the Jesse James films, like those featuring Billy the Kid, have ditched historical accuracy for shoot-'em-up dramatics. Noted Western author Johnny D. Boggs examines the Jesse James films in this well-done and informative 2011 release from McFarland & Company.
The first Jesse James film was an 18-minute silent movie entitled THE JAMES BOYS IN MISSOURI made in 1908. The most recent wide-screen Jesse James flick was AMERICAN BANDITS: FRANK AND JESSE JAMES released in June 2010. Boggs rated that flick as one of the most boring Jesse James movies ever released. Inbetween those two dates, some 40-odd films - silents, serials and feature-length films made in America and Europe - were produced. Western fans will recognize many of the films critiqued in JESSE JAMES AND THE MOVIES. They're a mixed bag, first-rate flicks like JESSE JAMES, featuring Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda, THE GREAT NORTHFIELD RAID and THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD being intermixed with routine Roy Rogers oaters like JESSE JAMES AT BAY and pure stinkeroos like JESSE JAMES' WOMEN. As mentioned, the common thread that almost all those movies shared was a lack of historical accuracy.
In summary, JESSE JAMES AND THE MOVIES has to be one of the most entertaining filmographies I've seen from McFarland. Boggs' witty and knowledgeable text makes the book a genuine pleasure to read. While the book features many evocative photographs and illustrations, it's Boggs' words that truly delight. It's a hoot! Highly recommended.
