The Cheap Bastard's Guide to Los Angeles: Secrets of Living the Good Life--For Less ReviewHaving just moved to Los Angeles, I found myself reading and enjoying this wonderful little guide book, which provides literally hundreds of great ideas of things you can do in the city on a small budget (something that is badly needed in today's challenging economy.)
I have lived in Los Angeles twice before and really thought I knew alot of great things to do here. After reading this book, I realize now that I had only been scratching the surface.
What I especially loved about the book was its creativity. I have read many a guidebook that shows the cool places to go and attractions to see in a particular place. Up until now, I had never read one that actually informs you of the best places to "dumpster dive" and gives a strategy on how you can place an effective "craig's list" add to obtain free services!
"The Cheap Bastard's guide to Los Angeles" is also that rare travel book that not only provides a first rate summary of exciting things to do in a particular place but actually espouses a positive way of thinking. When you read it, you realize that literally no experience is beyond your reach if you simply apply yourself and think outside the box.
I also enjoyed the author's quirky quotes and amusing life stories that she sprinkled throughout the book. Too many guidebooks do not give you any sense of an author's personality.
A great book to get if you truly want to experience Los Angeles and all it has to offer for a fraction of the cost. Here's hoping that Ms. Collins will be writing more books in the "Cheap Bastard's" series (in which other writers provide guides to Boston, New York, Miami, Chicago and Seattle), perhaps for some international cities!The Cheap Bastard's Guide to Los Angeles: Secrets of Living the Good Life--For Less Overview
