STANDING IN FOR LANA ReviewMr. Frattali writes about people on the fringes of glamorous Los Angeles, the servants, the has-beens. Those who almost made it, and those who never will. He paints their world with warm sadness. The writing has a feeling of space and air that I think of as a Californian style. Notable writers in this style are Jack London, John Steinbeck, and Charles Bukowski. The writer Frattali resembles most is John Fante.
The stories radiate hope. Frattali never sugar-coats the fact that these people failed; they did not get what they wanted, nor will they ever. On the other hand, they adjust, they remain soft, open to possibilities. They never give up on life. He ends each story with delicate, gentle humor, so we never pity his characters.
