Jennifer Jones: The Life and Films ReviewShortly before Christmas in 2009, Jennifer Jones died an old woman. It was the first time in a long time that her name had been in the news. She had been out of the Hollywood spotlight for decades, yet her death prompted me to revisit her career. Thankfully, most of her films are available on DVD and when I heard rumblings of this book being published, I was excited to have a "go-to-guide" as a reference on my book shelf. I received the book last week and read it from cover to cover in a day. Not to say it's a flighty read. No! Not at all! It was just SO good, I couldn't put it down! The author has dissected the movies in an easy to read, easy to find format and much of the information uncovered is new to me. He's researched his subject well and brought the most interesting of facts to hand. Along with the carefully chosen photographs, this book is a must have for any Jennifer Jones fan.
Along with her film career, the author weaves information about her personal life throughout. It blends well and helps the reader to understand what it took for Jones to give any one of her fine performances. A nervous, shy, reclusive individual, Jones probably should never have become an actress at all.
A very complicated relationship with her father (which the author touches on) was in all likelihood the catalyst for her choices in men, at least early on. Her second marriage (her first husband was the emotionally fragile, Robert Walker) to David O. Selznick controlled many of her career choices, and after reading about some of the films she DIDN'T do, you'd have to say that Selznick was a real detriment to her Hollywood career. I now wonder where her career would have gone had she made different choices. Jones seems to have gotten it right with her third husband, Norton Simon. They were married for over twenty years, until his death in 1993. Post death, her family have followed in her footsteps of keeping her private life - PRIVATE. That said, it makes the author's work here even more impressive.
Everything you've ever wanted to know about Jones is here, and even some of the things you wouldn't have thought about. With a foreword by TCM host, Robert Osborne, it's a wonderful tribute to one of Hollywood's most fragile of leading ladies.Jennifer Jones: The Life and Films Overview
